Managing Conflict Workshop
1-day

All organizations must focus on results: finding better solutions faster. To optimize performance, we must be able to effectively resolve issues, settle differences, and implement solutions on every level. Based on this proven method by Thomas and Kilman, this fast-paced, informative and interactive workshop helps participants discover how the ways they handle conflict, their conflict styles and others, affect performance and what to do about resolution. The purpose of this session is for each individual to learn more about his/her “natural” conflict style and understand the natural styles of those around them. The participants gain knowledge and understanding of how to approach conflict, how to see conflict through other perspectives, and what to do next when challenged by conflict.

As a result of the Managing Conflict training, participants are able to:

  • Recognize and understand the five conflict styles.
  • Become familiar with the terms “accommodate," “avoid,” “compete,” “compromise” and “collaborate” as strategies to resolve conflicts.
  • Learn the strengths and weakness of each conflict resolution strategy.
  • Understand that each style can become a strategy for resolving conflicts.
  • Expand self-awareness.
  • Learn their preferred or “default” style of conflict and analyze their effectiveness in different situations.
  • Assess conflict situations and apply the most appropriate modes.
  • Understand how to view the various responses to conflict in relation to satisfying one’s own interests, and the interests of another party.
  • Understand the differences between compromise and collaboration.
  • Practice and apply new skills to expand your skill and effectiveness.

Performance measures:

  • People can be at odds or disagree with each other and not take it personally.
  • Understand that each person has concerns and needs.
  • Each conflict situation is analyzed and appropriately responded to.
  • Situations are attended to right away and not left unchecked.
  • Dispute and controversy within the organization or between people is diminished drastically.
  • Tensions are recognized and dissolved efficiently and effectively.
  • Conflict is seen as a healthy, additional way to finding solutions and satisfying concerns.
  • People's attitude and morale are increased.
